Midnight Screenings of Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Cancelled Due to COVID-19 Restrictions

Evangelion: 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time

After proudly announcing that the IMAX version of Evangelion 3.33 (newly titled Evangelion 3.333) was finally being screened in theatres in Japan from today due to a “technical negligence” delaying its screenings by a day, the official Twitter account for the franchise announced that the first midnight screenings of the newest film Evangelion: 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time would be canceled due to the new State of Emergency limiting the operation time of cinemas in Japan.

The poorly thought out screenings were revealed in December 2020 to be the “World’s Fastest Screening” of the film, scheduled for midnight on January 22, the night before the film is scheduled to premiere. These midnight screenings cannot go ahead after the second State of Emergency was enacted in the Greater Tokyo Area, which asks entertainment establishments, such as movie theatres, to close at 8 PM. This means that all screenings for the day have to be finished by that time, making midnight screenings impossible.

The official Evangelion website expressed their “deepest sympathies to all the victims of the new coronavirus infection (COVID-19)” as well as expressing their “gratitude and respect to the healthcare professionals”. The post also apologizes to fans who were looking forward to the screening.

Evangelion: 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time is still scheduled to be released in Japanese cinemas on January 23 with the anime film already 100% complete. It was originally scheduled to be released in summer 2020 but was delayed due to the first State of Emergency.
